Asashoryu's alma mater, Meitoku Gijuku High School Kochi, a perennial high school baseball powerhouse, was forced to withdraw from the Koshien summer baseball tournament (big stuff here in Japan) just two days before the start. Players had been caught smoking and also had hazed junior members of the squad, problems the coach had covered up. You might remember that Asa established a yearly 1.5 million yen (about $13,500) fund to aide Mongolian high school kids who want to study for a year at the school.
