The ad was actually featured in both sumo magazines, Sumo and Ozumo.

Nor is it particularly unprecedented.  While still active Takanohana
appeared in a Boss coffee commercial.  The Kyokai close manages
exposure of the rikishi, and takes a sizable cut of the pie, but it
doesn't forbid appearance in commercials.
