Re: [sumo] New High School Yokozuna

This was sent to me privately but I am sure Katrina
does not mind by posting back to the list as I also
want everyone here to get the right name in case you
bump into Manager ISHIURA of Tottori Johoku High
School at the Kokugikan as he occasionally is known to
make a trip from Tottori to see his former students.

You are absolutely correct. His name is Ishiura though
I have no idea how to read his given name.

Ishiura singlehandedly built the sumo club at the
Johoku High School (actually there was not even a
dohyo before he came along). He is credited with
developing Keiji Tamiya (Kotomitsuki).

He also welcomed four students from Mongolia to his
school - the two of them are now in Ozumo -
Shironishiki (Sakaigawa) and Hoshikaze (Oguruma) in
Sandanme.
Another student participated in the Japan Games but
now graduated from the school and working for Tottori
Physical Fitness Association as an Exchange Relation
worker. "He had good skills but he was too small (175
cm) that if he turned pro he would have been
overwhelmed physically". As an educator he'd also
like to emphasize that sumo isn't the only choice in
life if they master Japanese and high school education
in Japan. Another student is in his second year and
still training at the sumo club.

"Mongolian students really train hard. Japanese kids
tend to lose their concentration once we start
'Butsukari Keiko' and figure the training session is
over. Not Mongolian kids. They keep going at it dozens
more even after they cool down. They keep us more
motivated and are a real inspiration to us all."
