At the All Japan High School Championships held in
Chiba Prefecture on August 3, 16 year old Masahiro
Yamaguchi, the first year student at Tottori Johoku
High School (Kotomitsuki's alma mater) won the Yusho
in the Individual Sumo category.
The last time the first year student became the High
School Yokozuna was 24 years ago in 1981 when Wakayama
Shingu High's Keita Kushima (former Makuuchi
Kushimaumi) won the Yusho.
"I am very happy but I came here specifically to win
the Yusho. I believed if I could show what I have been
training then I'd win," 180 cm tall, 135 kg Yamaguchi
said. Yamagushi says he is aiming to be like his
school's well known graduate and sekitori,
Kotomitsuki.
Applying powerful Tochiazuma like Ottsuke, Yamaguchi
beat his much bigger opponent, "Giant" (of Hotoku
Gakuen High School in Hyogo), 193cm, 165 kg Daigen Lee
(sp?) by uwate-dashinage.
Born in Tokyo's Koto-ward, Yamaguchi started sumo when
he was in Grade 4 and went to Tottori's well known
sumo school, Tottori Nishi Middle School after
graduating from an elementary school, living away from
his family. There he totally dedicated himself to sumo
training. He won the All Japan Middle School Sumo
Tournament in his third year at the school.
"During training sessions, I've only taught him how to
push forward but it's amazing to see how he can
naturally respond to his opponent's moves. He
possesses superb technical skills and extraordinary
physical ability. He should get much bigger. There is
no question that he should have a bright future ahead
of him," said Tottori Johoku's Sumo Club Manager
Ishihara.
"While I was still in the middle school, I've trained
against the Johoku High's Sumo Club members and I've
lost countless times. That's how I got stronger.
Regardless of this tournament record, I need to train
much much harder. I want to learn more dynamic sumo.
My ideal sumo is to jump out hard and immediately go
on offensive. I sure want to turn pro sometime in the future."
