Rikishi Talk Senshuraku Nagoya 2005
===================================
Hakurozan 8-7 (winning over Kotonowaka by tsukiotoshi)
-----------------------------------------------------
(Getting Kachikoshi in his Makuuchi debut basho)
"As my brother Roho went down on kyujo, I wanted to
get kachikochi desparately."
Tamaasuka 9-6 (losing to Tokitenku by hikiotoshi)
--------------------------------------------------
(Losing on the Senshuraku and missing Kanto-sho but
still got a respectable 9-6 record.)
"It's been just unbelievable!"
(Not feeling upset about missing the Sansho?)
"I guess after you kept asking about it, I am
beginning to feel a bigger shock..."
Futeno 10-5 (winning over Kaiho by fusensho)
---------------------------------------------
"I was able to come up with pretty good sumo quite a
lot this basho. I have been able to go all out this
basho. It often turned into a hidari-yotsu position
and I had to stay defensive. As the award if for
life, I am really happy about getting it."
(Aske what he would be writing on his blog tonight)
"Oh that's something for you to find out by reading
it!"
Kokkai 9-5 (winning over Takamisakari by oshidashi)
---------------------------------------------------
(On getting Kanto-sho Award)
"I've had good tachiai this basho. I was able to push
foward. From a point of view of time, it felt so long,
However I am really happy for receiving the award and
it gives me more confidence in myself."
Takamisakari 10-5 (losing to Kokkai)
-------------------------------------
(If he won, he got Kanto-sho Award)
"I knew about it beforehand but I tried not to think
about it. I am even happy that I got a double digit
win. I am totally satisfied with my efforts this basho
by involved in the Yusho race a bit."
- With so many injuries this basho, Takamisakari even
assisted in the Yokozuna dohyo-iri today as a
Tsuyuharai.
Kaio 10-5 (losing to Kotomitsuki by yorikiri)
----------------------------------------------
(Greeting his 33rd birthday with a loss)
"Prior to the basho, somebody wrote in some newspaper,
I am 'in danger of retirement'. I take no notice of
anything like that and it really doesn't concern me at
all. I can go on until I can no longer cut it."
Wakanosato 11-4 (winning over Kotooshu by hikiotoshi)
------------------------------------------------------
"I was only thinking to hit as hard as possible. After
all whether I won or not, it really has no bearing on
myself. I was able to go with my normal sumo form."
Kotooshu 12-3 (losing to Wakanosato)
----------------------------------------
"I couldn't move at all as I got so tensed up from
getting nervous. I felt the pressure. To be honest I
wanted to have another shot. But this basho for the
first time I was able to beat the Yokozuna and show an
excellent result. I am pretty happy that I stayed in
the Yusho race till the very end."
(Asked about Ozeki promotion possibility)
"That's too early yet.. I just want to stay out of
injuries and train hard. Ask me about it after I got
three basho straight."
(On his well know grip power)
"I could squash an apple with my hand if you are
wondering..."
(With his quick climb up the ladder, his Japanese
ability has not caught up yet, but with his amiable
personality appearing to cover up the shortcoming but
oftenl feeling homesick and calling his family
numerous times even during the basho)
"My family is very important, I love my family dearly.
I really want to see them soon. I joined Ozumo because
my father was seriously injured in a traffic accident
so I felt I needed to support the family. I also got
too heavy to continue with amateur wrestling after
winning an European Junior championship."
Sadogatake oyakata
------------------
"I brought him along because he had a straightforward
character. He possessed good fundamentals and had a
good mental approach. He has good lower back and he
loves to train. What more can I say?"
Oshiogawa Oyakata, Chief Dohyo Judge
-------------------------------------
"This one will build up to the future."
A unnamed oyakata
--------------------
(About Kotooshu)
"Well in the end, he will be this ..."
(Displaying a yokozuna dohyo-iri)
Asashoryu 13-2 (winning over Tochiazuma by
yoritaoshi)
------------------------------------------------------
"It's been pretty tough especially when I lost the one
that I still consider I did not lose altogether. Today
I did concentrate by thinking it's only one more
about. For a change, it turned out to be a pretty long
sumo. I went out telling myself I could never ever
afford to drop this one right here. I feel great."
(On sixth consecutive Yusho possibility)
"I sure like to get it."
Kitanoumi oyakata
------------------
(On Asashoryu)
"I saw added intensity from Asashoryu, not like the
previous bashos, like he could not afford to lose as
he has the same number of win and loss record as
Kotooshu and tied for the lead. But he showed his true
worth, a difference of ability. The five consecutive
yushos is a great achievement. It's not something
easily accomplished. Thanks to Kotooshu and others, we
had a good competitive yusho race this basho but it
showed chasing the Yokozuna won't be that easy.
Considering his age, we can expect him to keep on
winning the Yusho for sometime to come."
Takasago Oyakata (Asashoryu's shisho)
------------------------------------
"It was a well thought about sumo today. He never
rushed himself. This basho he lost two bouts but the
question is how he responds to this and leads into the
Aki Basho in September. Whether he will be satisfied
with the two loss record or correct any weakness he
sees and work harder on it. This was his fifth
straight Yusho and having the lowest Yusho winnning
line at 13-2 is a significant accomplishment in my
view."
