Maguroyama said it very nicely:
"I'm thankful that I get to experience a period
with perhaps the strongest yokozuna in modern times, while waiting for a
great rivalry to blossom. Each time has its charm, I think."
The yokozuna notched his fifth in a row, and who could have predicted a year ago (OK, yes, some of you old hands that know a lot more than I do) that we'd be seeing the possibility of a playoff for the 2005 Nagoya (or any other) yusho between a Bulagarian and a Mongolian? Well, I guess a Mongolian contender isn't all that big a surprise, but the fact that it could have been any one of several sort of is.
In any case, as Maguroyama noted, each era does have its own charm, and we are fortunate to be witnessing an interesting and exciting one right now. (Believe me, this beats the heck out of the Konishiki-Kirishima era any day, IMO.)
BTW, Magnus, thanks for the statistical analysis which helped prove a point I was trying to make in an earlier email, that Asashoryu is scary good: 57-3 in four yusho (two zensho) so far this year. It's easy, for me, at least, to imagine he'll win the two remaining, and go zensho yusho in at least one. If he does, I think that'll be a standard we'll all be grateful to have seen being set.
Back to extended lurk mode,
Benihaha
