There's no deserves about it. Takatoriki faced every opponent the
Kyokai matched him up with and at the end of 15 days he had the most
wins. That's all any rikishi can do.
What did happen, though, is that the Kyokai didn't take him seriously
until it was too late, causing a mad scramble to match him up with
high level opponents in the last days of the basho. The Akebono-Maru
match should never have been sacrificed. Takatoriki should have faced
higher quality opponents much earlier in the basho. The torikumi
makers screwed up. That shouldn't reflect on Takatoriki at all,
though, IMO.
