Re: [sumo] [Sumo][Spoiler] Banzuke - Promotion/ discussion
Takamisakari's promotion to M7E after he went 9-6 at Maegashira 8 West, just 2 basho ago, was the smallest boost ever achieved by anyone with that result at that rank. Of the 50 rikishi who've done that before, 13 were promoted to M4, 13 to M3, 18 to M2, and 1 to M1.
But then, at M7E, Takamisakari had the worst result he's ever had at so low a level in a full (uninjured) makuuchi-level basho. A couple of years ago, he could have gained a kachi-koshi at M3, but I don't think so any longer. IMHO, he's a M7-level rikishi. At M4, I'll bet he's ground meat.
Huge emotional ups and downs, all displayed on his face. Entertaining to watch and, as a result, his grateful opponents should have learned a lot from him by now: distinctive crowd-pleasing behavior attracts kensho.
Although my personal favorite remains Tochiazuma, I've been rooting desperately for Dejima to get his kachi-koshi these past several basho. He seems to be so grittily perseverent about his chronic leg problems.

Personally, I'm less interested in the ups and downs at the junction
between Juryo and Makuuchi. I want to see what happens to Takamisakari
after his 10-5 record. I suspect he will be elevated enough to get
seriously hammered in the next basho. Unless his performance this time is a
sing of things to come and not a complete fluke of the universe. Since he
is such a fan favorite, I hope he can continue to at least maintain some
kachikoshi records.
