| I'm sorry to have to disagree with you (ok, I'm not sorry but polite :).
|
| With this list I get all postings in a straight line in my mailbox, read
| those with a subject that might interest me and mark all others as read
| (yes, modern mailing software can do this). All this reading can be done
| offline.
|
| In a web forum, I have to click on every thread and scroll down to the
| bottom until I find the first new posting while waiting for tons of silly
| little pictures to load, just to read something like "yes, you're right".
| And of course, all of this has to happen online, including the quick
search
| for the interesting text about Whoeverhana I read some weeks ago.
|
| So my 2 (Euro) Cent: keep your progress for people with too much time.
| And by the way: you can have threading in mailreaders, too.

I was about to post the same response but you beat me to it. Forum
style discussion areas on the web tend to be much more difficult to
follow than a mailing list. With a list you can either have everything
come in linearly (as you mentioned and as I prefer) or as threaded
topics. I don't have to click anything, just hit the space bar and it
will scroll through an email and when it gets to the end it will move on
to the next unread message. Plus, since I'm always in my mail program
but not always in a web browser, I can just as easily read the sumo list
while keeping tabs on my inbox for "important" messages.
