I'm sorry to have to disagree with you (ok, I'm not sorry but polite :).

With this list I get all postings in a straight line in my mailbox, read
those with a subject that might interest me and mark all others as read
(yes, modern mailing software can do this). All this reading can be done
offline.

In a web forum, I have to click on every thread and scroll down to the
bottom until I find the first new posting while waiting for tons of silly
little pictures to load, just to read something like "yes, you're right".
And of course, all of this has to happen online, including the quick search
for the interesting text about Whoeverhana I read some weeks ago.

So my 2 (Euro) Cent: keep your progress for people with too much time.
And by the way: you can have threading in mailreaders, too.
