Mr. Takeji Watanabe was a president of Kyodo News Service from 1978-1985,
and passed away on April 2, 2005.

That was the only Mr. Watanabe who passed away earlier this month.

The news did not mention anything about his association with Sumo Kyokai.

Masumi-san: Thanks for your response. I have now found out that my friend and landlord in Roppongi was Watanabe Tadao, who was born in 1898. He would have been 107 years old in September. I don't know exactly when he died -- it could have been last month or even earlier. I just heard about it yesterday.

Is there a way to search the Sumo Kyokai names back in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s? I don't know whether he was Director of the YDCommittee or just a member.

I remember that his wife took my wife and I to the basho a few times back in 1985 or '86 -- in Chiyonofuji's prime time. We had great seats!

How about another lunch? As you probably know, Toshi Sushi-ya is closed now. They have opened a very high-end kaiseki restaurant up in Sharon Heights, near Menlo Park.

Let's meet one of these days!

Thanks again,

earle
