[sumo] asashoryu and lynn matsuoka
i was just watching a dvd of the sept 2001 tournament day 10. lynn matsuoka
was the guest commentator and they were reviewing asashoryu's win over
wakanosato the previous day. asashoryu gave a whack to wakanosato after he
had hit the dohyo. lynn was very scathing in her criticism of asashoryu and
his style. one comment she made in reply to murray johnsons discussions of
future ozeki was "i don't think thats ever going to be a concern for
asashoryu......i'm sure he'll never be considered for ozeki in my lifetime".
of course i'm sitting here now with hindsight so its easy to laugh at how
off that prediction was, but what i wonder what lynns opinion of asashoryu
is these days? do you think he has developed as a person as well as a
rikishi or would you still think he lacks the essence of sumo compared to
tochinonada (an example you gave in that same broadcast).
by the way i remember when david beckham was a young teenager coming through
the ranks of man utd. i had the chance to meet him several times. i thought
he was a nice friendly guy but i do remember saying to my friend "he's not
good enough to get a regular starting place in the first team.....he'll
probably fade away to some smaller club" of course he went on to win
everything with united, now plays with real madrid as a "galactico", and is
captain of england. guess my prediction skills weren't so hot either
