[sumo] Yokozuna Tamanishiki - addendum
A bit more about Tamanishiki.
He was born in 1903 and promoted to Yokozuna in 1933.
For a long time he was not promoted and once he got so
upset that he started swinging a Japanese katana sword
like a la" Bill Kill".
He was a very much of Boss Man. He loved to pick
fights, especially with Yakuza members around Ryogoku.
This may have been one of the reasons it took a while
to be acknowledged to be worth a Yokozuna (he thought
because he was not a part of Dewanoumi Ichimon which
has been always a dominant force). But he really took
care of many younger rikishis once he matured as he
did help train later yokozunas Tochigiyama and
Futabayama.
In 1938 he was coming to Osaka from Miyazaki and
started getting sick on a passenger ship. There were
doctors and medical people on the ship but he refused
to be seen saying it was just a cold. He actually had
an appendictis. Even once he got to Osaka and found an
ambulance they asked for was not waiting for him, he
walked back to
an inn. By the time he was taken to an hospital later,
he was in a grave condition. But even in the hospital,
he started getting violent as he was told not to drink
water and drank. The medical staff could not even get
close to him. But by then it was too late.
He was only 34 years old.
It was Tamanishiki who grew Nishonoseki Ichimon to
what it is today. He was the first active rikishi ever
to receive a Kyokai sponsored funeral.
