[sumo] His Legacy
As pointed out Taiho Oyakata is more or less paralyzed
in half of his body. It was a kind of incredible
seeing his dohyo-iri sometime ago with the condition
he was in.
Unfortunately now he mostly requires a wheelchair to
get around as he condition is getting steadly worse as
he ages.
But you know this is the man - one of the most
ferocious yokozunas of all time. He still deeply cares
about sumo even though he no longer is involved with
the daily operations of his one time heya as Otake
oyakata (former Takatoriki, his son-in-law) took over
and is running it now. But the oyakata cannot get one
rikishi out of his mind.
He is the last of his recruits to become a Makuuchi
rikishi. A rikishi he has taught everything from a
scratch. When the rikishi went out for a de-geiko just
prior to the basho, he was seen getting out of the
wheelchair and using a cane so he could see him up
close and personal. His eyes were solely focused on
him as he yelled instructions to him
This rikishi says whenever he goes to the heya office
to say hello, the oyakata tells him he was doing this
wrong or that wrong. The oyakata simply cannot leave
him alone. The oyakata has accompllished a great deal
during his career and thereafter but he still feels he
has one more major task unfinished.
The oyakata developed him into a respectable sekitori
and he was promoted to Makuuchi this basho. But the
oyakata believes the rikishi he developed from a raw
recruit, can achieve a greater success in the world of
Ozumo. Until this happens the oyakata will not rest
easy, come wheelchair or cane.
It has now become his lifetime passion - the oyakata
with a Russian heritage to hand over the torch to
another Russian rikishi to bring the circle all the
back way back.
The name of rikishi is, of course, Roho.
