[sumo] Unique College Student
At the All Japan College Sumo Championship held at
Sakai City Ohama Sumo grounds in Osaka on October 3,
there was a unique student rikishi from the
prestigeous University of Tokyo. He is the only
foreign born student belonging to the Sumo Club. He is
24 years old Czech, Petel Matuche ???? (remember I am
transcribing from katakana).
He is a slender build man with 190 cm tall and weighed
in 74 kg. He entered in the category of 75 kg and over
but lost by shitate-nage in the first round. "I tried
to get an uwate and got beaten," he said in fluent
Japanese.
In Czech they have a Sumo Association with over 500
members. Sandanme Takanoyama of Naruto Beya is from
Czech Republic. Compared to other European
nations, sumo is more well known there. However he
said he had no idea what type of sport sumo was until
he arrived in Japan.
The reason for his plunging into this unknown world
was an invitation from his friend to see a sumo
practice at the University's Sumo Club last June. "I
started getting curious and then everyone was really
kind to me so I decided to join," he said as he became
the member that day. He says he has no problem with
putting on a mawashi and competing in front of people.
He is studying civil engineering at "Todai". He says
he loves old Japanese architecture and is very
interested in Japanese culture. "Sumo still retains a
lot of traditions and customs. More and more you
learn, more and more you realize the depth".
He started playing volleyball when he was 14 years
old. He feels he has good strong legs and lower back
that should help him become successful in sumo. "I
think it will give me a good strong jump necessary for
the initial attack and provide me with firm footing. I
know I can get much stronger."
Just like Sadogatake Beya's Kotooshu from Bulgaria has
done in Ozumo, he is burning with desires to bring in
a new breeze into College Sumo.?@?@
