[sumo] Sumo Beya Diary

Dewanoumi Beya
--------------

Dewaootori (real name Matsumoto Taichi), 19, made his
dohyo-debut in March this year and he has already
climbed up to Sandanme.

Dewaootori was crowned as the High School Yokozuna
August last year while he was a third year student at
the famed Meitoku Gijuku High School in Kochi
Prefecture.

Dewaootori won all his seven bouts in Jonokuch to win
the Yusho in this May Basho, followed up with a six
wins and one loss record in the July Nagoya Basho.

In one week prior to the last basho, he suffered
severe skin rashes in his left leg and was receiving
an IV for half an hour daily. "I've lost 7 Kg in one
week," Dewaootori said.

On Day 12 he faced his classmate at the Meitoku High,
Maenoyu of Takadagawa Beya but lost by oshi-dashi. At
the time both had 5 wins and 0 loss record. However on
his final bout of the basho on Day 13, he faced small
but quick Tokinoumi and had trouble chasing him down
but he eventually won by hatakikomi to get his sixth
win.

He will likely climb up to a single digit Sandanme
rank the next basho. His rival Maenoyu lost to
Shiraishi of Mihogaseki Beya on Day 13 so they ended
up with the same record.

Maenoyu may barely squeeze into Makushita next basho.

Jonidan East 26 Dewanonada announced his retirement at
the end of Aki Basho and completed his Danpatsu
ceremonty at the heya on the day after the Senshuraku.

He was from Hiroshima City and made his dohyo-debut at
the 1999 Natsu Basho. His highest rank was Sandanme
East 82 at this year's Hatsu Basho. A small rikishi
with 178 cm tall and weighing 117 kg, he used to favor
throws from migi(right)-yotsu.

He decided to leave as he had a tendancy to suffer
from dislocated shoulders.

"I have no regret whatsoever. My happiest moment was
when I first was placed in Sandanme," Dewanonada said.

He has been a tsukebito for Oginishiki and said he
learned a great deal from him. "I've seen even if you
are injured, you would go up and do all you can. I've
learned you never ever give up until the very last
moment."

He will be working for a shipyard located in Marugame
City, Kagawa Prefecture.

Makushita West 47 Yamasaki won four straight bouts in
the Aki Basho to get Kachikoshi.

"I felt I was able to put in some good training prior
to the basho. My chin doesn't go up now and I have not
been pulled down. I have been moving well," Yamasaki
said.

He says his main goal now is to get back to his
highest career rank of Makushita East 25. He joined in
the 1999 Natsu Basho with Tenpouzan but as of the Aki
Basho Tenpouzan decided to retire due to hernia in his
neck. Yamasaki says this news has made him more
determined than ever to do well.

"He was much stronger than me when we joined together
in the heya. So I will miss him as he is leaving here
due to an injury. We've come up together always
helping each other out. So I do feel I want to do well
for his sake as well," Yamasaki said.

Musashigawa Beya

At the All Japan Prefectural Middle School Student
Sumo Championship and All Japan Middle School Sumo
Championship in 1996, Tenpouzan placed the third while
he was in third year at Kounan Middle School in Osaka.
Sandanme Tenpouzan was a promising rikishi but has
decided to retire at the end of Aki Basho and had his
danpatsu ceremony completed on the morning of the
Senshuraku.

(I recall Tenpouzan beating Hagiwara in the Sandanme
Yusho kettei-sen in the 2003 May Basho, bulldozing him
out of the dohyo in a flash.)

"Just prior to the May Basho, I injured my neck during
training. Basically I didn't get it to look at that
time until this basho when I found myself not being
able to move my neck at all. I went to see a doctor
and he told me I had a herniated neck and as long as I
continued doing sumo, it wouldn't heal fully. So I
made up my mind to get it treated seriously. I have a
few people who may help me find a job back home. But
first I go back to Osaka and get a drivers license,"
Tenpouzan said.
