[sumo] Sumo Beya Diary
Irumagawa Beya
--------------
Jonidan Kitaouji, 19, who arrived in Japan with Baruto
from Estonia and made his dohyo debut in May, has
retired and returned home.
"Around mid August, he came to see me and told me to
let him go home. He already had an air ticket he
purchased from somewhere and didn't want to listen at
all to whatever I'd say. So I complied and approved
his retirement and formally forwarded the request and
paperwork to the Kyokai on September 9," Irumagawa
oyakata said.
Some of the people connected with the heya were
pointing out several contributing factors. First he
lost quite a bit of self-confidence as he were getting
beaten by Sandanme level rikishis. And further he
could not take this summer's oppressing heat and
humidity in Nagoya any longer. But they said the one
that made him decide to leave was his girlfriend back
home. Apparently Kitaouji went to a Manga/Internet
cafe in Nagoya to chat with her and she asked him to
come back.
They say he totally stopped learning Japanese since
then and he did not want to even talke to Baruto when
he tried to convince him to stay at a rikishi clinic
class.
"Apparently he asked an acquaintance to purchase him a
ticket to home. At the end he was bad mouthing
everything Japanese and Japan, and then he left," a
heya member added.

Estonian phenom Jonidan East 30 Baruto displayed his
strength by beating his heya mate Satoyama in the
Jonidan Yusho Ketteisen at the Aki Basho and won his
second and consecutive Yusho. Since his debut at
Jonokuchi he is currently without a loss, winning all
fourteen bouts.
Baruto speaks not only Russian but also German and
English, and still eager to learn as much Japanese as
possible by challenging some of Japanese culture -
this time by diving into "Loach Hotpot Yanaga style"
(a hotpot of loach with egg, check this site of the
recipe if you read Japanese, here's URL
"What is this?" he asked first. Rounding his 197 cm
frame over the pot, he carefully put his chopsticks to
pick a piece of the fish up and put it into his mouth.
"Oh, this is delicious. Very good," Baruto said
sounding rather pleasantly suprised. This basho he
even "experimented" to become more superstitious and
borrowed "Sagari" from his heya mate Shiraishi after
winning his first day bout.
His country man, Kitaouji, who came to Japan with him,
retired and went home but he is staying put. "I miss
him but I will do my best here. Japan is fun, Sumo is
fun," Baruto said.
The promising new star is gradually getting accustomed
to the sumo life in Japan.
