[sumo] A Brief Musoyama Story

Musoyama became High School Yokozuna while attending
Mito Nogyo (Agricultural) High School in Ibaraki
Prefecture. In his third year at Senshu University, he
was crowned as "Amateur Yokozuna". In the college days
he was considered to be one of the two top amateur
rikishis in Japan and was often referred to as "Oso of
the East, Yamamoto of the West" (Oso is Musoyama's
family name and Yamamoto is Tosanoumi's family name.
Tosanoumi attended Doshisha University. Senshu
Univesity is located in Eastern Japan while Doshisha
in Western Japan.)

He quit the universtiy to join Ozumo at the 1993 Hatsu
Basho with a Makushita Tsukedashi ranking. He was
promoted to Makuuchi in four bashos since the dohyo
debut. His oshi-ziumo had incredible force and one
time he was labelled "the Monster of Heisei Era".

In the 2000 Hatsu Basho he won the Yusho as a Sekiwake
and was promoted to Ozeki after the 2000 Haru Basho.
However he started to experience a variety of injuries
soon after. He had to even withdraw from his Ozeki
debut basho due to a lower back injury. He was demoted
from Ozeki only two bashos after his promotion.

Since then he suffered injuries to left shoulder, left
elbow and knees and he was never able to realize his
potential to be a Yokozuna.

His Makuuchi Record as of Day 3 Kyushu Basho:
520 wins, 366 losses and 122 kyujos.
