[sumo] Heya Notebook: Musashigawa Beya Oct 2004
Makushita West 47 Yamasaki won four straight bouts in
the Aki Basho to get Kachikoshi.
"I felt I was able to put in some good training prior
to the basho. My chin doesn't go up now and I have not
been pulled down. I have been moving well," Yamasaki
said.
He says his main goal now is to get back to his
highest career rank of Makushita East 25. He joined in
the 1999 Natsu Basho with Tenpouzan but as of the Aki
Basho Tenpouzan decided to retire due to hernia in his
neck. Yamasaki says this news has made him more
determined than ever to do well.
"He was much stronger than me when we joined together
in the heya. So I will miss him as he is leaving here
due to an injury. We've come up together always
helping each other out. So I do feel I want to do well
for his sake as well," Yamasaki said.

At the All Japan Prefectural Middle School Student
Sumo Championship and All Japan Middle School Sumo
Championship in 1996, Tenpouzan placed the third while
he was in third year at Kounan Middle School in Osaka.
Sandanme Tenpouzan was a promising rikishi but has
decided to retire at the end of Aki Basho and had his
danpatsu ceremony completed on the morning of the
Senshuraku.
(I recall Tenpouzan beating Hagiwara in the Sandanme
Yusho kettei-sen in the 2003 May Basho, bulldozing him
out of the dohyo in a flash.)
"Just prior to the May Basho, I injured my neck during
training. Basically I didn't get it to look at that
time until this basho when I found myself not being
able to move my neck at all. I went to see a doctor
and he told me I had a herniated neck and as long as I
continued doing sumo, it wouldn't heal fully. So I
made up my mind to get it treated seriously. I have a
few people who may help me find a job back home. But
first I go back to Osaka and get a drivers license,"
Tenpouzan said.
