RE: [sumo] (semi sumo) Las Vegas note
Most days it's not a problem, since there's enough wind to keep the air
clear. Worst days are if the wind is blowing (over 30mph/50kph), which
picks up dust from the desert and construction sites, or if there is no
wind at all (not a common occurrence). On the worst days in the winter,
no wind, inversion layer, it's almost as bad as Los Angeles. Those
don't show up until around January.
October is one of the best times to visit the desert. Temperature is
bearable for tourists (a little cool for my taste, but I take 3km walks
in 35c+ weather), wind hasn't started yet (100kph winds and nothing to
slow them down can be exciting), very little rain, and not a cloud in
the sky. It may still be a little too warm for a side trip to Death
Valley or a hike down the Grand Canyon if you aren't used to extremely
low humidity climates.
The air quality is actually better now than when I moved to Las Vegas 32
years ago. The heavy industry plants on the edge of town have put in
scrubbers which have taken all the chlorine and titanium out of the air.
