Just a speculation, but the "dishonorable" or "self-depreciating"
meaning *could* refer to the wry recognition that battle and martial
pursuits are ultimately ones of destruction rather than those arts of
creating, like artists/artisans, cha-dou, etc. In my own experience,
this is typical of the enlightened samurai aesthetic, not to mention
the usual Japanese practice of self-deprecation. (Like the neighbour
that gives you some cookies, saying, "These are probably bad, but
please accept some of my cookies.") ^_^ Well, maybe it's a stretch...
