Re: [sumo] oshi-dashi'd message

Josh points out the overall achievments of Kaio, meaning he deserves being a Yokosuna
because of them. Interesting statistics. I'm sure Kaio can be compared in favour, but
the problem, as I understand it, is that you have to have these consecutive
performances to get the rank. Kaio has been up and down, although from a high standard,
but when should the point come for him to be promoted because of "long and well done
services"?

Very good point. There has to be a "right moment" for promotion, and that moment is right after an outstanding performance (preferably yusho).

So, why not just promote any ozeki to yokozuna after his third (fourth, fifth...) career yusho, like some has argued? Because that would take away the pressure of the tsuna-tori basho. Each time Kaio has won yusho, there hasn't been pressure on him. With added pressure to win, he has failed each time. (12-3 in Kyushu was a big step forward though.) I see the "consecutive yusho-equivalent" requirement as a test to see whether the ozeki can perform under pressure to win, because that's exactly what is expected from a yokozuna each time he steps onto the dohyo.

If the requirement was changed to say, three career yusho, any ozeki with two yusho would be in constant "promotion mode". A Chiyotaikai yusho out of the blue would mean instant promotion to yokozuna. I don't think that would be an improvement.
