Asashoryu Does Dohyo-Iri

Yokozuna Asashoryu displayed a Yokozuna Dohyo-iri in
front of 800 people at the newly opened
Hiratsuka Arena in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture
on August 28. The arena is located close to Takasago
Beya summer training camp.
Asashoryu has just returned from Mongolia where he had
an elaborate traditional wedding ceremony. He is
scheduled to hold a "Japanese" wedding reception at a
Tokyo area hotel on August 31.
"I will start training seriously after the wedding. I
know I won't have too much time till the basho starts
but I will work as hard as I can," said the yokozuna
aiming for his consecutive fifth yusho.
He was following closely to the developing story of
his good friend, Koji Murofushi who earned the Silver
medal in Athens for hammer throw as the gold medal
winner Adrian Annus of Hungary was suspected of
providing a urine sample not of his own. "Yeah I am
hoping Murofushi get Gold as it was only a 28 cm
difference," Asashoryu said. (Annus was later
disqualified by IOC. That made Murofushi, the 16th
winner of Gold medal for Japan.)
Kanechika's Danpatsu Ceremony

Former Juryo Kanechika and newly titled Miyagino
oyakata, 34, had his Danpatsu ceremony at the
Kokugikan on August 29. His Shisho up to now,
Kitanoumi oyakata participated in the cutting
ceremony.
Kanechika retired at the Nagoya Basho after marrying
the second daughter of former Komusubi Hirokawa who
was Miyagino oyakata when he passed away. The
previous Miyagino oyakata took over and operated the
heya until now. The former Miyagino oyakata assumed
Toshiyori Kumagatani and will continue to guide the
heya rikishi assisting Kanechika.
"I feel some anxiety but for the good of prestigeous
heya, all I can do is to do my best," said Kanechika
in becoming a heya holder of another Ichimon group.
