[sumo] Bit of Sumo News
Amid the seas of Olympic reporting, here's a few of
Sumo related news from the last few days:
Asashoryu in Mongolia
----------------------
Yokozuna Asashoryu, 23, finally had his wedding
ceremony in Mongolia on August 19. Dressed in
traditional Mongolian attire, the bride and groom
exchanged the wedding ring in front of 1,000 invited
guests including some from Takasago Beya people.
Asashoryu also performed the Yokozuna dohyo-iri at the
reception party held later and received thunderous
cheers from the guests. Asashoryu is
scheduled to hold another wedding reception in Tokyo
on August 31.
Ozumo in Mongolia
------------------
Sources close to the Monglian Government says the
Government will formally request to have an Ozumo
Jyungyo staged in Mongolia and will be asking Japanese
Foreign Minister Kawaguchi for her cooperation when
she makes a formal visit there
on August 31.
Mongolians will be celebrating the 800th Anniversary
of the founding of their nation in 2006 and the
Jyungyo will be expected to become one of the main
events.
"As we have not made it public yet, we cannot talk
about the details but we definitely have an interest
to bring in the Ozumo here," a Mongolian Government
source said.
Toshiyori Merry-Go-Around
-------------------------
On August 23, the Kyokai directors approved the
assuming of Toshiyori Nakagawa by the current
Toshiyori Kumagatani (former Maegashira
Asahisato).
Some may recall on August 7, the former Nakagawa
oyakata (former Maegashira Zaonishiki) assumed
Toshiyori Shiratama, vacating Nakagawa Toshiyori
Myoseki.
This was all triggered by former Juryo Kanechika
inheriting Miyagino Beya and forcing the previous
Miyagino oyakata to seek out for a new
Toshiyori myoseki to remain with the Kyokai. The
previous Miyagino oyakata (former Maegashira
Chikubayama) is expected to assume Kumagatani
Toshiyori shortly.
