I was watching Japan's National Soccer team beat Team
China in Beijing to win the Asia Cup again.

For those who may have not been checking the sports
news in Japan, there were more off-field news and than
on as the Chinese soccer fans booing during the
playing of Japanese national anthem as well as
throwing garbage to the players and supporters.

Even the Japanese Government got into the act by
requesting the Chinese authorities to ensure the
safety of the fans and players. The Chinese obliged
by deploying 10,000 riot squad and security personnel
in and around the stadium.

Now I was thinking back on the China Jyungyo just held
a couple of months ago. There both in Beijing and
Shanghai, the fans were polite and respectful of the
rikishis and Japanese fans. The news reports I've
read all said how the Chinese fans were courteous and
polite to everyone involved.

What has changed in the two months since the Jyungyo
was held. For those who wanted to voice their
political opinion certainly could have done it at the
Jyungyo. Or the sumo fans there sufficiently
different from soccer fans ? Just was wondering...

I don't think anything has really changed. I feel part of it is that sumo fans everywhere differ from soccer fans anywhere. Also, since most public and political miscreants know next to nothing about sumo, they've never thought of using it as a political stage. Hope it never crosses their mind.
