Actually the precedent has been set with Yokozuna
Takanohana's wedding. It was all arranged by
Takanohana's wife Keiko who used to work for Fuji TV
and they did broadcast the event exclusively.
As far as I remember, all revenues as well as gifts
from the guests (including his oyakata) went to
Takanohana and his wife (however you must remember
Japanese weddings are very expensive and the bride and
groom would provide their gift to each attendee, often
costing hundreds of dollars).
Most rikishis meet their future wife through some type
of arrangement through their heya connection, often
with the Oyakata or his wife making the initial
introduction as they play the go-between. In this
case, they would need to provide certain appreciation
to the go-between. But recently more sekitoris are
showing their independence and finding their future
spouse elsehwhere.
Still the traditional customs die hard in the sumo
world so anytime they are not followed, then some may
get upset. I believe one of the reasons Mainoumi did
not stay was to do with his marriage. He went against
the wish of Sakaigawa oyakata to marry his daughter
and instead married an owner of restaurant with three
kids.
Mainoumi not only gave up the opportinity to succeed a
major heya but also a future promising career with the
Kyokai.
As for the story, this time coming from Shukan Post,
another notoriously low class weekly with a definite
anti-sumo slant, they are just regurgitating what
YuKan Fuji tabloid has originally "reported".
