Wrong shoes or not, that's quite an accomplishment.

I was lucky enough to visit The Great Wall several years. 
Even with appropriate shoes on those steps are killers. 30 
centimeters high? Maybe on average, but the thing about the 
steps is that they are *not* similar height as you would 
expect a modern staircase to be (at least where we visited). 
One step might be 30 cm, the next 20cm, the next 40cm, the 
next 25cm, the next 30cm, the next 35cm, etc. 

I just could not get into any kind of rhythm in climbing 
those steps, with each a different height from the previous 
one, always having to watch that next step. And while some 
areas are gentle slopes, others are very steep. It's quite a 
workout!
