Makiko Uchidate may be abrasive but she is the most
knowledgible member in YDC. She is passionate about
sumo and what it represents as Japan's national sport.

She is a well accomplished screen writer with over two
dozen major works mostly on TV. She wrote "Chiyonofuji
Story" in 1992. A year later, she wrote for NHK's
daily morning drama, "Hirari", a story about a girl
who loved Sumo more than anyting else in the world.

Uchidate spent so many hours in sumo heyas when she
was preparing for the story that some people thought
she was an Okamisan. She is a consummate writer but
she said when she had to write for a drama that's
shown six times a week for six months, she had to know
every detailed background.

Makiko Uchidate cares deeply about Sumo and its place
in Japanese society. As a writer she has always been
very interested in Japanese history. She also wrote
for NHK's Taiga drama, "Mouri Motonari", which was
origiannly broadcast in 1997 but was shown on TV Japan
a while a back.

As you can see, I am a big fan of Makiko Uchidate and
I consider if there is one thing that the Kyokai has
done right in the last several years, it was to
appoint her to the YDC even though it had something to
do with the Governor Ota problem brewing at the time.
