Yes, this has happened three times. Here is the full list of demoted
Ozeki and how they did in their Sekizeki basho (three rikishi got kosho
status, so the second tournament is listed as well):

1972.05 Maenoyama 7-8
1974.07 Daiju 9-6
1975.11 Kaiketsu 7-8
1976.07 Mienoumi 10-5
1977.11 Kaiketsu 6-9
1985.07 Kotokaze 0-0-15, 0-0-15
1993.01 Kirishima 0-0-15, 5-10
1994.01 Konishiki 2-13
2000.01 Takanonami 10-5
2000.07 Takanonami 7-8
2000.09 Musoyama 10-5
2001.09 Dejima 5-10
2001.11 Miyabiyama 0-0-15, 0-0-15
2004.07 Tochiazuma ?

More trivia, of the 88 kadoban states since introduction of this system
1969 72 achieved kachi-koshi (5 even winning the yusho, Takanohana I,
Konishiki, Takanohana II, Kaio and Chiyotaikai), and the above listed 14
are the make-koshi cases who actually competed at Sekiwake. Kiyokuni
1974.01 and Wakashimazu 1987.07 retired as Ozeki rather then trying to
get 10 wins as Sekiwake.
