I agree with you that anything helps. Those Masu seats
are hard to fill as they are pretty expensive. Not
many individuals can shell out over 40,000 Yen (for
four seats but more like for three normal sized
people) every day.
Occasionally I was able to get the seats from my
brother-in-law who works for a GO (general contractor)
company as they used to have them for the full 15 days
so we could request them and pay for them as weekday
ones were easier to get. But in the last five years or
so the construction markets have totally collapsed
there. The company that helped to build the high rise
twin towers in Malaysia's capitol is now on a brink of
bankruptcy. The Kyokai cannot get back many of their
former customers like them so they need to explore the
new avenues and for that Dentsu and JTB may help. I
believe what really could drive this thing is if the
Japanese governement make it easier for them to write
off them as "business" expenses as they used to do a
long ago.
Anyway if I can get Dentsu and JTB to come on board,
I'd rather get Dentsu to produce better promotional
material and have JTB to come up with Sumo packages.
As a quasi-foundation, the Kyokai do not lose money
per se so they do not need tons of money desparately
but lot of people working for shops and Jyungyo tours
are suffering. Filling seats may look good on TV and
may bring more excitement and outsourcing the
operations save them extra resources.
This is easy but still a copout. As this thing only
applies to the Tokyo bashos it won't do any good in
Fukuoka or Nagoya where they have so much difficulty
attracting the spectators. And they have not addressed
all the serious problems facing their Jyungyo
operations at all. Have they outsourced them or
brought them back inhouse? That is more like a flavor
of the month. I wonder if they sold out the Chinese
Tour yet...
