Re: [sumo] Yasukuni event

I went on a wet, grey Sunday morning in 1999. The area is like a mini
amphitheatre. They had put down tarps on the ground areas. Behind those
areas were short grassy hillsides with a couple of tiers. (see pic 1) There
were ropes around the covered ground areas and in my pictures I see signs
for each area. I'm assuming they were reserved otherwise, I would have sat
there too. I do see a couple of gaijin in them later, so maybe you can
sneak in. First come first served seating elsewhere.

I checked my diary, and I woke up at 7am to get there. I lived in
Motoazabu, so it would have taken about an hour to get there. I, of course,
didn't write down what time I got there. Sorry. I was there a good hour or
more before it started, at least. I'd aim for no later than 9am to get a
good seat. When I got there, the tarped areas were empty, but I took a seat
on a wall under some cherry trees on side marked east. I'm not good at
estimating distances, so sent a few pics of the event from my 'wall seat'.
Hope they
help.

pic 1 was when the lower ranks were practicing. Not too many people yet.
pic 2 was the makunouchi dohyo iri
pic 3 was Akebono after his dohyo iri

That year there were some food vendors outside the area too, though I read
in Katrina's post that there isn't much. I stayed until 2:40pm, since I had
to get home. The event was still going. Hope this helps. Bring water and
covering depending on weather. Enjoy! --Marisa Z.
