RE: [sumo] Musashimaru in Washington Post
It's funny that the author of the article mentions that he was somewhat taken aback by Musashimaru's wish to conduct the interview in Japanese.
I've had a similar experience some time ago.
When I went to Musashigawa-beya for practice once, after keiko was over, Musashimaru called me over indicating he was gonna give me advice and so.
And that time he insisted on speaking Japanese, which also caught me off-guard, since I spoke no Japanese then.
So, I can understand that the reporter must've been somewhat flabbergasted when he was expecting to get some inside info from a fellow American.
But I think with Musashimaru it's the fact that he's used to thinking about sumou in Japanese etc., so he wouldn't be comfortable initially talking in English.
Then when he was giving me advice, after a couple of minutes, which he spent joking and laughing, he got more comfortable and switched to English...
Well, just what I've experienced...
Later,
