I don't know if you've been talking to Akebono lately
but the demise of Akebono was greatly exaggerated as
he seems to appear almost every week on Japanese TV.

I've seen him on a weekly news digest show (TBS's
Sunday Morning) and just this week on "Oshare Kankei"
("Fashionable Relations") with Masaru Hanada, former
Yokozuna Wakanohana III.

I believe this weekend there is another K-1 show on TV
which apparently pits "Akebono Army" against "Sapp
Army". As well there is a talk that he may fight
again in a month or two against another mid-level K-1
fighter.

He says he is now in much better shape than a month
ago and just like in sumo, he can fight every other
month. But as far as I can see him on TV, he does not
appear to have lost much weight. Personally I think
he should put in a couple of months of hard training
before he goes up on the ring again to suffer another
humiliating loss.

But regardless he has been a TV rating winner so far
as every appearance he made on TV, he got a high
rating which certainly makes all the executives and
sponsors happy. Perhaps he has a future as a "talento"
on Japanese TV.

P.S. Both Konishiki and Mainoumi are also doing very
well on Japanese TV - I believe there is a TV special
on Koninishiki's marriage this weekend as well as a
travelogue in which Konishiki and Mainoumi go to South
Korea. Actually Mainoumi is everywhere on Japanese TV
these days.
