Japan's ruling party fails to hook heavyweight

TOKYO (Reuters) - An attempt by Japan's ruling party
to put some muscle into an upcoming election campaign
has been tossed out of the ring. 

   

Shuhei Mainoumi, a popular former sumo wrestler, has
turned down repeated invitations to stand as a
candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in
elections for parliament's Upper House in July, Kyodo
news agency said on Friday. 


"He has been getting offers since late last year, but
he just keeps on refusing," the manager of the
wrestler-turned sumo commentator told the agency.
Though he is relatively small compared with many sumo
stars, Mainoumi's skill won him a high ranking and
many fans during his decade-long career.
