Just a comment on two of the Hawaiians:

1. Duke Kahanamoku was a fantastic swimmer. He set the world record
in the 100-yard freestyle, winning the Olympic gold medal in 1912
(slightly before my time:-). He practically single-handedly invented
sport surfing.

2. Herman Wedemeyer played halfback at Saint Mary's College in an
Oakland, CA suburb. In the mid-1940s Saint Mary's had about 500
students total. He was a concensus All-American back in the days when
half-backs ran the ball, passed, kicked, and whatever else came up. He
finished high in the Heisman trophy voting three times, losing out to
greats like Doc Blanchard and Glen Davis, the two Army backfield aces.

Off topic but interesting!
