Re: [sumo] Asashoryu in NYC photos

This seems to be clutching at very thin strews to me.
I believe "ballplayers" is a very Americian term that refers to bassBALL players.
If you were in a room full of cricketers and asked for all the ball-players to raise thier hands not one would put thier hand up.Of this I am certain.
You would be mighty wrong in trying to assert that cricketers are ballplayers.Infact, many cricketers would laugh out loud and say you have no idea what you are talking about.
I could go on picking at the rest of your rebuff, but won`t.
I don`t care what term you call anybody by just be aware that you are wrong when applying your code to people it does not belong.
Mighty simple to be sure, old chap.

Sure I would. I would call them both ballplayers. (Or was that too predictable for you?) A cricketer is a certain type of ballplayer, and a baseballer another type of ballplayer.

Personally, I would call them both budoka. (Having practiced aikido for the past 20 years myself...) A judoka is a certain type of budoka and an aikidoka another type of budoka. But I do think you'll find that the terms "judo wrestling" and "judo wrestler" are quite common if you look around a bit...

> If you refer to a rikishi as a wrestler you are wrong.

I don't agree. There is freestyle wrestling, greco-roman wrestling, Korean wrestling, Mongolian wrestling, sumo wrestling, Nordic wrestling, etc, etc... And a rikishi is just a certain type of wrestler, i.e. a wrestler who practices the traditional Japanese style of wrestling, which is called sumo or ozumo.

I refer to Doreen's posting, as I think she hit the nail on the head, there.

Saying that a rikishi is not a wrestler is like saying that a Ford is not a car.

Yup.
