[sumo] Asashoryu in New York
Asashoryu left NYC yesterday to return to Japan for the jungyo beginning
Friday. He was here being honored by an organization dedicated to the
spiritual significance of sports including spiritual progress through
fitness. Both he and his brother, Sumiyabazaar, the Garuda, or
yokozuna-equivalent of Mongolian sumo, were recipients of the awards
sponsored in part by UNICEF. I attended the ceremonies on Monday which
included the "christening" of a dohyo on the organization's grounds. Both
were very tired, having arrived in NY that same morning from Narita.
Tuesday was a free day for the Yokozuna and Sumiyabazaar, so we did a little
sightseeing and some shopping for the boys back at Takasago and for the
brothers' families.
A bit of interesting information- Asashoryu is quite the wine connoisseur.
As he was perusing my wine collection, he chose the very best vintage
Margaux - 1970 Petrus - and the 1982 Bordeaux by which to be impressed.
Well, I was the one impressed.
He was also quite amused by the victory photo in the October issue of Sumo
magazine, where only I appear even though Katrina and Meikenonami were also
in the photo. He pointed out bits of Katrina and Meike at the very edges of
the photo.
I was very sorry to see him leave this morning and sincerely hope he will
return to my fair city. I think he will.
The photos of the ceremonies will be ready today, and I will certainly put
some on a web page later, if anyone is interested.
