i too contacted him and got the same answer but i sent him a pic of mine and 
he had to agree it was a print. don`t know if he changed the listing though

I got a reply from the guy with a suspicious Akebono tegata for sale on 
Ebay. Here is what he says:

"Aloha,

 Hmmm... Would  Chad Rowen carry a fake Tegata With Him?  I really do not
have much knowledge in sumo product, so I had to get information from other
ebay site.
However this Tegata was given to me by the man himself, when he came to my
store years ago in Hawaii.
