At the All Japan High School Championships ("Inter
High"), two team mates from Meitoku Gijuku Academy met
at the Individual Sumo Final.  This is the same
championship Yokozuna Asashoryu representing the same
school, once earned the third place. 

The 184 cm tall, 155 Kg Mongolian exchange student
placing the second is planning to join Ozumo next
Spring.  "My goal is to attain the rank of Yokozuna,
not the Yokozuna Asashoryu-zeki," he said when asked
if he was aiming to be the next Asashoryu.   

On this day the Meitoku Sumo Club captain Matsumoto
defeated the teammate from Mongolia by tsukiotoshi.
"This has been my dream ever since I came to the 
school," Matsumoto said.  He has been entering
"Wanpaku Sumo" championships at local 
Osaka area since he was Grade 4 student.  

Matsumoto decided to go to the Meitoku in Kochi
Prefecture after he was scounted by Meitokur Sumo 
Club's Director Hamamura during his Junior High
School.  

After his graduation from Meitoku Gijuku next Spring,
185 cm tall, 170 Kg Matsumoto wants to turn a pro. 
"He shows us a grand scale sumo style just like you
expect from someone of his size. He has a cheerful
personality and he has done a great job as our team
captain," Director Hamamura said.   

Hamamura also indicated he received a congratulatory
call from Yokozuna Asashoryu, the club's most famous
alumuni.  "I think, comparing against the Yokozuna's
High School days, Matsumoto looks just as good. 
Though he has a different sumo style, I certainly look
forward to his future accomplishments," Hamamura
added.     

Note: This morning's (August 3) New York Times has an
article (on Page 3 no less) about foreign born sumo
rikishi with reference to Kotooshu, Kokkai and
Asashoryu.  Basically using comments from Sadogatake 
oyakata, it says Japanese young kids don't show any
inclination to work and train hard any more compared
to the foreign born rikishis.
