[sumo] Jungyo news- jinku on August 3, 4

While on the subject of the current jungyo, here's a very small news item; today and tomorrow, at least, members of the Ryogoku Jinku-kai will be appearing, I believe right at the end.

Last night in Ryogoku there was the first night of the Bon Odori. The wide road between the present Kokugikan and the site of the first one was blocked off, and local residents, including me, were dancing in circles around two drum towers. During the interval the local Jinku-kai performed. (Jinku are traditional sumo songs, sung in a declamatory and highly ornamented style to a very limited number of tunes.) Their leader and teacher, a former makushita called Kuninishiki, told me about their new venture and asked me to tell people. If you've every been to the Kokugikan on a weekend you may have heard some people singing in the old station entrance -- that's Kuninishiki's group, and sometimes others from nearby.

For those of you now in easy reach of Ryogoku, OTOH, let me recommend the second and final night of our Bon Odori this evening (Sunday 3rd), 7-7.30 or a little later. Nothing to do with sumo except for the occasional sumo-san not away on jungyo.
