[sumo] Tegata
For what it is worth, after the Australian tour in '97 the Kyokai
gave gifts to all who had been associated with it.
The top level gifts, which went to a small number of people,
including the Prime Minister, State Premiers (Governors in some
countries) and other key organisers, were very nicely mounted and
framed tegata and signatures of both Akebono and Takanohana, with
their respective vermillion stamps. Those tegata were black, and in
response to my question at the time, I believe I was told that black
was a more formal color.
I can't remember who told me that though, and am not sure how
accurate the information was. I had always believed, as John Gunning
suggests, that there was no difference.

Subject: [sumo] Red vs Black Tegata
I was looking at the photo of Asashoryu making Tegata and was wondering what
the difference was between a black hand print and a red hand print. All of
the ones I have are red, I've been offered an Akebono in black, but have
been passing it up because I'm not sure of the difference.
The not so knowing Hinerikeri!

the only difference is the colour of the ink. tegata (both printed and
original) are among the most popular items i sell on ebay so i have seen
almost every wrestles now in both forms. the printed versions are always red
(except for those that may come with a magazine sometimes). originals are in
red or black. a sekitori may do it in whatever colour takes his fancy on any
particular day.in march when i was at sadogatake beya morning practice 3
sekitori gave me tegata as presents. kotomitsuki did his in red but
kotonowaka and kotonomine did theirs in black.
hope that helps
