[sumo] Some pictures of Taiho:

Hi, everyone.

This is a little late to be a birthday present for the list, but I guess it will be all right. :)

About 2 years ago when my Japanese teacher found out I enjoyed sumo, she gave me four pictures of Taiho. I didn't until last weekend get them scanned in. But now they are online (please thank Alexander "Doitsuyama" Nitschke for hosting the images), so I'd like to share them with everyone.

You can find the images here: http://130.149.112.57/ryan/

A run-down of the images:

"Taiho-1" is a picture of Taiho posing with my Japanese teacher's father (see below).

"Taiho-2" is a match held at Minemachi. I'm not sure who the other wrestler is.

"Taiho-3" (my personal favorite) is Taiho in kesho-mawashi.

"Taiho-4" is a wide-shot at a jungyo match. Really you can't see Taiho all that well (he is facing away from the camera). But should be interesting if you want to see how a dohyo is put together on jungyo.

Quite honestly I don't know what age Taiho is in these photos. I think he is about 20 though, so just a bit before his Yokozuna promotion perhaps. (Maybe if someone has pictures from different ages to compare we can get it figured out...)

The small images are actual size (on a 1200x800 monitor). The large images are really just there for fun (this will be uploaded by tomorrow; sorry for the wait).

The images are messed up in some places. Sorry about that. You have to remember these are over 40 years old!

Okay, so the story behind the first photo: Taiho and my teacher's father met one day out on the street. Taiho needed money for a cab ride and her father gave him fare. Since then (up until he retired), Taiho would send him tickets to the basho held in Tokyo. My teachers's father was a HUGE fan of sumo, so he would even leave the shop during busy hours just to go watch.

Well, I hope you enjoy the photos.
