[sumo] on this day: 1948
Nippon Times Magazine, Thursday 3rd June 1948
WORLD OF SPORTS
Moving his massive body with surprising speed, Champion Azumafuji
finished the grueling 11 day summer tournament at the Meiji Shrine Outer
Gardens with ten wins and one defeat to cop the coveted victory trophy. The
350 pound Azumafuji thus becomes a strong contender for promotion to the
Grand Champion rank - the highest a sumo wrestler can attain. Grand
Terukuni, Tokatsuyama, and Orochigata each had nine victories and two
losses. Up-and-coming Rikidozan was thrown three times but looked promising
in giving Azumafuji his only defeat and beating Grand Champion Terukuni as
well. Sumo fans missed Grand Champions Haguroyama and Maedayama who were
unable to perform because of illness.
