I agree with Bitgood, and am glad to see "Morning Soy Sauce" out of the
running. Had he chosen to stay, there's a very real chance he'd have gone
makekoshi. Good riddance, bucko. Better luck next time. People are
starting to figure him out, and lose their fear of him. That can't be good
for his chances.

We shall lose at least co-leaders two from the san-pai ranks tonight which
will thin out the contending herd a bit, but I for one am enjoying this
basho immensely. Takamisakari's performance has been a real joy to behold,
and wonder what special award(s) he will win. Musoyama's performing close
to or at the caliber befitting his rank. Chiyotaikai blowing Toki out of
the ring like the chump that he is could only make me smile. Tokitsuumi
leading most of the way but now faced with a serious uphill battle against
three ozeki -- who can not find this interesting? Or how about Kaio putting
the hurt on Tochiazuma with a little elbow to the chin action, knocking him
silly for a second. Back to kadoban for you, 'Zuma.

I guess to put a fine point on it, I like to be going into day 13 without
knowing who the winner is absolutely going to be. I like to see good
performances out of quirky, unknown, or once-slumping rikishi. I guess we
like different things. 'Shoryu can stay gone, for all I care. A gaggle of
ozeki contendors chased by some spirited maegashira and others, all fighting
decently but not dominantly, keeps things immensely interesting, in my view.
Nothing's worse than one or two days of sumo with a yusho already decided.
blah.

have a couple of guys I am watching like Takamisakari and Kokkai in Juryo
but that is about it. Without a Yokozuna, things are not the same. Is it any
wonder the Japanese public watches less sumo or stay away from the arena?
Bad tournaments won't keep me from following sumo but when the Japanese
public has so many other things to get their attention sumo will continue to
lose.
