more about women's sumo

A few people had asked me to report the results of
last week's Women's Sumo Tournament in Fukushima-cho,
Hokkaido.  The event was fantastic.  About 60 women
participated, from all over Japan.  This year's
champion was from Okayama-ken, and she beat last
year's winner in an exciting (but somewhat sneaky)
final bout.  I was the only foreign "rikishi" this
year; I won my first two bouts and lost in the third
round after a respectable struggle.  I'm hooked!  For
my efforts I received a case of canned coffee, lots of
dry squid (Fukushima's main product other than
yokozuna), konbu, hand soap, and 10,000 yen.

The story appeared in several Hokkaido and Hakodate
newspapers and was apparently also featured on NHK
news sometime earlier this week (including, I'm told,
one of my bouts), but I didn't see it.
