RE: on this day: 1988
Oh to have video of their matches. I've never had the pleasure of
seeing Konishiki, but I have seen Mainoumi and his tenaciousness.

Some of the most memorable matchups in sumo were the bouts between
Konishki
at 250 kg and Mainoumi (just under 100kg?). Despite the vast difference
in
size as long as Mainoumi kept moving he had a good chance of pulling
Konishki down. In a head to head tachi-ai Konishki was like a bulldozer
as
he scooped up the smaller rikishi and forced him out. But those times
Mainoumi could pull off his spectacular henka (and literally jump over
Konsihki like a pole vaulter) Konishki often found himself at the wrong
end
of a bum's rush out of the ring from behind.
Their first match even made it to a few US TV news broadcasts. It was a
dramatic illustration of why sumo doesn't need the weight classes found
in
other forms of wrestling.
