RE: on this day: 1922

Just curious, how long has the custom of giving artificial flowers of
chrysanthemum and cherry been going on? ;-)

The Osaka Mainichi, Thursday 13th April 1922

Wrestling Matches for Prince

    "Sumo", Japanese wrestling, will be featured as one of the
entertainments for the Prince of Wales in Tokyo. It will be given on the
premises of Prince Iyesato Tokugawa's residence in Sendagaya, suburb of that

city, on April 15, after luncheon. A "dohyo", an earthen platform for the
wrestlers, will be erected in an ancient orthodox style in front of the
foreign style building. After the bouts by the less skillful wrestlers in
the beginning, Onishiki and Tochigiyama, the two noted champions, will
conduct what is called the "dohyo-iri", or ceremony of entering the
platform, which will mark the ending of the wrestling novices and the
beginning of the bouts by champion wrestlers. At the beginning of the
wrestling by champions, Tochigiyama and Onishiki will show how the novices
are trained. Then there will be 10 bouts given by picked wrestlers. The
winners will then receive, according to an old custom, artificial flowers of

chrysanthemum and cherry. At the end, the ceremony of accepting the trophy
of victory will be conducted, known as Yumitori Shiki, or the ceremony of
accepting a bow. The Tokyo Sumo Association has recalled all the wrestlers
now out of the city traveling in different parts of Japan, to be sure that
the entertainment of the Prince will lack nothing. The following matches are

some of the selections made.
    Ibukiyama vs. Dewagatake;
    Kiyosegawa vs. Yahagiyama;
    Onosato vs. Chibagasaki;
    Tsunenohana vs. Genjiyama;
    Onishiki vs. Tochigiyama
