RE: [Sumo Movies] Takanohana Special on DVD?
Just a word of warning -- the DVD IS region 2 encoded. So, unless you are
lucky enough to live in region 2 area (or have access to a region-free DVD
player), you won't be able to watch it. I guess NHK is afraid that everyone
outside of Japan/Europe will buy the DVD before the show plays in the
theaters elsewhere ;-)
The DVD is a must for Taka fans (writing as a one), showing bouts and
footage from thoughout his career. The action is great. I especially liked
the shots of his early bouts. There is alot of focus on the Ake-Taka
rivalry. They show their first bout. I hardly recognized Akebono! Skinny!
They glossed over -- for the better, I think -- most of the low-lights in
his career (the Waka-Taka feud, the brain washing, his failed romance, etc).
One thing that struck me was the color changes of Taka's mawashi as he rose
through the ranks. I guess it's because he was at the top tow ranks for so
long, that I picture him always wearing the black or dark blue. The first
signs of those, however, were when he hit Ozeki. He seemed to be very fond
of maroon and sage green prior to that.
