Oh you haven't heard them say that?  I've heard a few
people say it, mostly people outside of Japan to be
honest.  The theory is that the salt makes it easier
to slip on the clay.  The last time I heard this was
from a color commentator a few tournaments ago, but
I've read it before.

I don't think there's much to it.  The only thing that
ever made sense that someone once argued with me about
salt was that sometimes it can stick on the rikishi's
hands and make a face slap accidentally get it in the
opponent's eyes.  I doubt it happens ever, and I don't
think it's any reason to want to ban the salt, though.
