Yes Mr. Petrow's absouletly right. While when
entering any rank of sumo, especially san'yaku, is
only partly a formula and partly a decision based upon
your sumo, the yokozuna status is obviously very much
moreso. In other words, getting back to back yuushou
does not in any way guarantee yokozuna status. In any
event, even if Asashouryuu got 12 wins and the yuushou
he probably wouldn't get it because the rijichou said
he would only have no qualms with promoting the oozeki
if he obtained yuushou and won 13 matches.
I just feel that with no yokozuna present (not that
Asashouryuu can't compete well against Musashimaru),
three oozeki missing (one of them being his rival),
and the other oozeki struggling so much, Asashouryuu
will have to demonstrate a very dominating presence on
the dohyo this basho. Of course, he does seem to be
doing so, though, to be fair. Even slightly injured
he pulled of a win typical of his sumo day 11, and day
12 he just blasted Shimotori out for a very fast
oshidashi.
In any event, though, I'd still only really feel
confident in him as a yokozuna if he were to win a
basho with some heavier competition present, namely
Chiyotaikai and Musashimaru.
